As Nurses are now in high demand, a lot of students are certified each day as Nurses. If you wish to start up or further a career in Nursing or Midwifery, you need to make sure that you do that in an accredited institution. Many have fallen victim to studying in schools that are not accredited and ended up wasting their study period/time.

Nursing is a provincial course in Nigeria, but before getting enrolled into any school or Department of Nursing, Midwifery, or Post Basic Nursing, it is advised that you find out if the institution is accredited in the practice of that course.

It is of no use being a student of an accredited department or tertiary institution. Yes, no knowledge is a waste, but it is generally agreed that the time you would spend learning when you cannot practice what you have learned is not time well spent.

Some individuals are ignorant of the accreditation of their course of study. This is unwise as such individuals may become unfortunate while regretting their actions or inaction rather.

It is even devastating for a person who is in the final year before a course becomes accredited in his or her Institution, as such individuals would have to start over or pause their admission to wait for the current students in the first year before they can obtain a certificate of practice.

The other option left for such victims is to drop out and start over again; but either way, both options are none the wiser.

Out of the 236 Nursing institutions in Nigeria, only 182 are accredited by the Nursing & Midwifery Council Of Nigeria. From this number of accredited institutions, Anambra State houses nine (9) of them.

A Nursing institution may have a provincial accreditation that lasts for two years, while others have a full accreditation spanning for five years. If an institution is not accredited, this means that the school lacks the necessary education facilities or does not reach the standard requirements to function as a school of Nursing.
