The need to know what contraception entails becomes important as abortion is illegal.

Contraceptives can either be permanent or temporary.

The permanent contraceptives are the vasectomy (males), tubal ligation (females). Vasectomy is a surgical procedure in which the male vas deferens ( the vessel that transport sperm from it site of production) is cut and died . According to statistics , out of 146 men , about 130 men rejected this procedure while the remaining 10 accepted with conditions ( Pub Med, 2009) . Tubal ligation is a surgical procedure involving the blocking or removing of the Fallopian tube . Tubal ligation and Vasectomy has been shown to be reversible, through the tubal ligation reversal and vasectomy reversal procedures but these procedures doesn’t guarantee success in conceiving a child .

The fear of “ what if all my children die one day and I want to give birth” becomes a worrying concern to Nigerians , which bring us to the temporary contraceptives .

Temporary contraceptives are classified into long acting or short acting contraceptives. Long acting means , it can be effective for a long period Of time ( 10,5,3…..) while short acting means it only last for some period of time ( immediately after sex, months , weeks )

Intrauterine Device (IUD)
Long acting includes IUD (intrauterine device ) and Implant.

Intrauterine device is a T- shaped plastic and copper device that releases copper into your womb . Copper thickens the cervical mucous and makes it difficult for the sperm to survive . IUD has be shown to be 99 percent effective . It can last for 5-10 years depending on the type inserted . Women who are on IUD are encouraged to use a safe toilet hygiene method and also report to the hospital for any sign of infection . Women are also health educated to keep in view the thin plastic string coming of their cervix after the procedure is being done

Levonorgestrel Intrauterine system .

Implant is an hormonal contraceptive method that involves the insertion of a plastic rod in the upper arm of the woman . This place implant releases progestin that thickens the cervical mucous and it lasts for 3-5 years. This method is discouraged for overweight or obese women .

Contraceptive Implant ( Implanon)
The short acting includes ; male and female condom, natural family planning ( calendar-method), lactational amenorrhea( only possible for women on exclusive breast feeding), oral contraceptive, injectables.

Natural Family planning ( Calendar method)

Lynestrenol ( Oral contraceptive )

Medroxyprogesterone acetate ( Depo provera) Oral contraceptive

Condom .
A feminist once asked me why almost all the contraceptives are being directed to women and not to men and the ones that are meant for men are not usually used ( with condom as an exception )…. oh well! I have no opinion of myself… what do you think about that.
