Hygiene as widely known is the science of health, its promotion and preservation that is the conditions and practices or activities promote and preserve health. Thus hygiene being centered on health can be separated into two main categories which is Persornal Hygiene and Environmental or Public Hygiene which the importance of both cannot be overemphasized. Many outbreaks of contagious diseases in recent decades have had a negative impact on community resources, however research on infectious diseases during the recent past had mainly focused on secondary and tertiary levels of prevention and, unfortunately, primary prevention measures such as personal hygiene had been overlooked.

Importance Of Personal Hygiene.

Good personal Hygiene is important for both health and social reasons. It entails keeping our hands, head and body clean so as to stop the spread of germs and illness. Our personal hygiene benefits our own health and impact the lives of those around us too. Good personal hygiene is important for maintaining both physical and mental health.
In people with poor personal hygiene, the body provides an ideal environment for germs to grow, leaving it vulnerable for infections. On social level, people may avoid a person with poor personal hygiene, which may result in isolation and loneliness. Thus social benefits associated with personal habit is Paramount and must be highly considered. Since it involves washing the body everyday and caring for oneself, it reduces the chances of body odour and any chances of embarrassment at work or at school.

A daily personal hygiene routine and it’s importance thus involves.

Hand washing:
The first place to start with your personal hygiene routine is your hands. We use our hands constantly during the day, touching many different surfaces, shaking hands with people, eating our meals, typing on the laptop or using a common telephone at work, or even playing Naturally, our hands are the biggest carriers of germs. One of the quickest and simplest ways to ensure our family is safe from illness is to practice good hand hygiene. It can keep illness such as cold, cough, flu and gastroenteritis. ( this can all be contracted or passed on through poor hand hygiene) at bay.

Thereforeone can stop the spread of illness causing germs by washing your hands frequently with water and soap;
1. Before eating or cooking
2. After picking up a baby
3. After visiting the toilet
4. After coughing or sneezing or contact with someone who is I’ll.
5. After in contact with animals.
Caring for your teeth and practicing good oral hygiene wards of gum disease, bad breath, tooth decay and many other infections. Therefore we should always;
1. Make sure you and your family brushes their teeth twice a day- after breakfast, and before bed.
2. Floss the teeth daily
3. Store your tooth brush in a clean dry place and replace it regularly.
Do shower everyday using warm water and soap. You could consiery showering twice a day when weather is warm. Daily bathing is an integral part of good personal hygiene because;
1. Bathing daily with soap and warm water prevents body odour becauy it kills the odour causing bacteria.
2. Shampoo and condition your hair at least once a week to keep the scalp clean and prevent lice.
3. After being out all day or being caught in an unexpected down pour get home and get a warm bath using adequate soap. Don’t allow wet clothes to dry on your body.
Germs and dirt can cling to your clothes, too. Wash your clothes after each use so that these germs and impurities are removed.
Finger nails may harbor dirt and germs, contributing to the spread of bacteria. It is easier for dirt and germs to collect under longer nails, so keeping them short can help reduce the risk of spreading infection.
The above listed importance of personal hygiene is needed for an adequate healthy living of an individual and so should be made a habit as our daile routine. Keeping oneself clean is personal hygiene and highly important but Public Hygiene is equally important as dirty surroundins may lead to more of houseflies, mosquitoes and other insects which are major vectors of many communicable diseases. Clean surroundings also provides good mental health as it soothes our mind.
Public Hygiene is the science and practices to make our surroundings clean and free from the spread of communicable diseases therefore maintainance and adherence to public hygiene is important to prevent chronic and very harmful diseases which can affect all the single life residing in an environment. Public hygiene if not maintained will create a chance of chronic disease to be spread as epidermic. This will affect a large scale and will not be curable. Therefore it is important to prevent these diseases as well as for a healthy growing population.

Importance Of Public Hygiene

Public Hygiene helps;
1. To promote health
2. To prevent disease transmission
3. To improve quality of life
4. Public hygiene also promotes personal hygiene
5. To aware about disease outbreak.
Emerging infections, such as acute respiratory syndrome and novel forms of influenza, are presenting new threats to human health, even in developed countries with strict public health regulations, these types of disorders remain common possibly because exposure to pathogenic microorganisms is an everyday event that can only be avoided by adherence to good public health behaviors.


Keeping the body and environment or surroundings clean has positive effects on a person’s social life and their physical and mental health.
Personal and public hygiene is simply looking after the body and our public environments and surroundings and keeping it clean and healthy. These are both indispensable to human health living.
Therefore Developing and Maintaining a personal hygiene routine is key to having a healthy body and Mind.
