MISREPRESENTATION OF THE PROFESSION: REPORT ON SOME SENIOR NURSES WORKING AT UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, IBADAN
While many nurses are working towards making nursing better and getting back so many nursing procedures which has been taken by our counterparts in the health care system, it is so painful that some nurses in various hospitals are pulling down the recovery process by their act of laziness. Although, we have many senior nurses working hard professionally and taking responsibility for their duties.

The negative actions of several senior nurses in many hospitals across the country has overwhelmed the actions of those doing well with their duties. It is known by every nurse that many of the senior nurses once the post of a senior nursing officer is being attained, becomes lazy and shift almost all the procedures to the junior ones and even give it to the medical doctors/students to do, some due to idleness become errand officers for doctors or nurses carrying out their procedure.
In this regard, the information about the attitude of senior nurses working at the maternity complex UCH, Ibadan was brought to my attention. At UCH Ibadan labour complex, senior nurses stressing the junior ones are used to saying they have worked in the past and they can’t be stressing themselves anymore, meanwhile, they are still collecting salary and being counted as part of the workforce of the unit. Furthermore, their regular statement include them saying they have also passed through being maltreated/overworked and they are also trying to reciprocate that on the junior nurses.
I asked what the nurses do when they are on duty but not working and I was told they stay in the nurses room, some go for breaks during procedure hours, some go to the breakroom immediately after taking over to sleep only to come around when it’s almost handing over time. Some stay around only to be seen on phone watching movies, documentaries or listening and singing loudly to music. The effect of the attitude to work by these senior nurses has increased workload on the junior nurses and a ridicule to the profession as the doctors in the unit are aware of these actions and send these senior nurses errands such as picking of continuation sheets, treatment sheet etc.
Furthermore, it was also said that the unit and sectional heads are aware of these but not doing anything to call to order these Nurses who have failed to realise that the promotion they get comes with huge responsibility which is not just for them but also for the profession.
On the other hand, there are senior nurses at this institution who do not shift responsibilities to the junior ones, instead, they actively participate in all nursing procedures and uphold the nursing profession in a higher standard but this is not the case for senior nurses at UCH labour complex.
Conclusively, to rebranding the image of Nursing, the nurses at various sectors need to be responsible for this to be achieved. The senior nurses should dutifully carry out their procedures and maintain the high standard which nursing is known for, the apex nurses at UCH Ibadan should look into the plight of the junior nurses working at labour complex and all other units in the hospital where the actions of the senior nurses negate the ethics and etiquette of the profession.
